Wayne Rooney is one of the richest football players in the world thanks to a pair of massive contracts from his club, Manchester United.

Rooney started out his football career with Everton, where he made his professional debut at the age of 16. After two years with Everton, Rooney moved to Manchester United via a £20 million+ transfer.

Rooney is one of the most prolific scorers in the history of English football, having notched over 200 goals for Manchester United and Everton. During Rooney's team with Man Utd, the team has enjoyed a remarkable amount of success, having won multiple English Premier League titles as well as the Champions League.

Rooney's most prolific seasons came in 2009-10 and 2011-12 when he scored a total of 34 goals in English Premier League and other competitions.

Wayne Rooney signed a new 4-year deal with Manchester United in February of 2014. The deal, which commits Rooney to Man Utd until June of 2019, will see the footballer receive £300,000 per week, which works out to about $26 million per year. At the time that the deal was signed, Rooney still had an additional 1 1/2 years left on his existing deal that will see him receive roughly $32 million before the new deal kicks in.

Despite being one of the most recognizable football players in the world, Rooney has seen his popularity with endorsement partners sag considerably. Many speculate that this is due to a number of different scandals that Rooney has been involved in over the years.

EA Sports elected to end their multi-year partnership with Rooney and he has had a tough time attracting new companies to take their place. Rooney earns an estimated $3 million/year from endorsement deals with Nike and Samsung, but he trails players like Messi and Ronaldo by a significant margin when it comes to dollars generated off the field. Part of Rooney's new deal with Man Utd will see the team try to increase Rooney's endorsement income.

Rooney and his wife have invested considerably in real estate, having amassed a $20 million portfolio that includes properties in Cheshire, Dubai, Florida and Barbados.

-Something that will certainly endear Rooney to advertisers once again - winning.

If Rooney can lead England to a strong performance in international competition (World Cup, Euro) or help Man Utd to another English Premier League or Champions League title, the endorsement deals will likely come flooding back.
