6 Barbaric Nigerian Traditions That Need To Go Extinct

FULANI CULTURE

From the enchantingly heartwarming to the down right cringe worthy, truth be told regardless of race, colour or even civilization, we’ve all got bizarre traditions which have adamantly refused to be eradicated. Today we narrow our lenses as we bring you 6 Bizarre Nigerian traditions that need to go extinct:  Some are more evil than the others but which of these do you hate or dislike the most?

See the 6 barbaric traditions after the cut.....

 Female Circumcision
FMG
Even the mere sound brings goosebumps! Sadly although widely campaigned against in Africa, this barbaric tradition has its avid followers who would defend it with the last drop of their blood. Female circumcision is done to control the woman’s”insatiable” sexual appetite, to ensure chastity till marriage and increase sexual pleasure for the man.

Fulani’s “Sharo Festival”
sharo
Playing Knight in Shining armour might sound fun, but this reality is all shades of cruel! “Sharo” translated as flogging, is a festival participated by the agile Jafun Fulani youth ready to take a wife. He is flogged mercilessly in front of spectators  at the market place and expected to “bare it all” without flinching. This is proof of his bravery and courage (reminds me of the phrase – You be man! #NotFunny).

Burying of Kings with heads

A king must never journey into the land of the unknown alone,  this reportedly exists in Nigeria. In the Yoruba part of Nigeria it is the duty of some chiefs dubbed with the title “Abobaku” – translated literally – ‘One who dies with the King’, to indeed die with the king (it is an” honour”).

Widow humiliation
Widowhood-14-2-15
This is brutal in every way! The fact that your heart is physically wrenching into pieces is not enough conviction here. Widows are forced to undergo severe maltreatment( shaving of her head, drinking the water used to wash her dead husband’s corpse and sleeping with him) to prove their innocence as regards the death of her husband. And of course, after the burial she gets remarried to the younger or older brother of the deceased.

Oro Festival

This festival observed by the Yorubas, restricts freedom of movement of women and non indigenes and the ultimate price – death is served if either is caught.
Oro is a deity worshiped across Yoruba land, which forbids women from going out at night during the period of the festival.

The Osu caste system
osu
Practiced religiously by the Igbo people in Southern Nigeria. The Osus are labelled outcasts, dedicated to an idol. They are regarded as not been part of the people (free borns) , therefore they’re discriminated against and have to deal with unending social stigma which is transferred from generation to generation.
