Movie Review: Alessandro Carloni and Jennifer Yuh’s ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’

Master Shifu – “If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than you are now.”

Po – “I like who I am”

Mater Shifu – “You, don’t even know who you are!”
So yeah, here’s the thing; Different strokes for different folks; while some people go all out working their butts off trying to carve their “precious names in gold”, some others are every bit contented with their present position and can barely even be bothered by such “superficial things” as greatness and legacy. To them, life’s golden rule is all about reveling in the moment and allowing the future take care of itself.

And this, was our ever bubbly hero – Po’s (Jack Black) mantra, well at least until he’s unceremoniously proclaimed the “Dragon Warrior”, leader of the clan and unhumourously thrust with the almighty responsibility of teaching and leading five of the greatest warriors; Tigress (Angelina Jolie Pitt), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross) and Viper (Lucy Liu) to his utter belief.

Oh yeah ladies and gentlemen, this where it all begins; the highly anticipated sequel to one of the most successful computer-animated action comedy martial arts film- ‘Kung Fun Panda 3’ kicks off its plot with full force; Impressive visuals, effortless humour, easy dialogue (regrettably, it’s more talk and less action – ‘Kung Fu’ stunts take the back stage unlike its predecessor while it focuses on the “Chi”) but all the same her audience is taken on a smooth ride of self discovery, acceptance and confidence.
Surprise, surprise! Out of the blue Po’s biological father Li (Bryan Cranston) shows up and it’s a beautiful and emotional meeting filled with jolly Panda bonding for Po and his newly found dad which understandably places Po’s adopted father ‘Ping’ in a place of insecurity as he feels threatened by the new dad who is out to “replace him” in his son’s life.

Oh but apparently that’s comes no way to close as the clan is in for an even bigger surprise when the “Master of pain”, “Beast of vengeance” , the irredeemable Kai (J.K. Simmons)- who had been banished to the spirit world 500 years ago makes his “grand entrance” – stronger than ever and armed for a bitter rematch and off, goes their peaceful existence.
Meanwhile Po’s in the bid to master the only charm which can subdue their immortal enemy, journey’s to base,- a secret Panda village and it’s a hearty tale of self discovery as he discovers what it’s truly like to be amongst his own kind and squaring up to face your fears. But does Po who was “accidentally” chosen to humble the ancient villain have what it takes to be the saviour?

Can a mere loquacious Panda, mistakenly dubbed – “Dragon Warrior” whose success regime involves sleeping his lazy ass off till noon and stacking up his insatiable stomach with tons and tons of food every minute square up to an egotistical power drunken monster who has conquered many many Kung Fu masters including the reverend Oogway, channeling their chi to carry out his evil plans?
Greed, betrayal, vengeance, insecurity, self discovery and acceptance, ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ through a humour laddened inspirational dialogue teaches it’s audience to embrace every facet of their being with an understanding that regardless of personalities we can achieve anything we set out to if only we believe.
And speaking of self confidence, here’s a vivacious flirty character you can’t help but love; Self acclaimed unbeatable Ribbon-dancing expert panda – Mei Mei (Kate Hudson). Her first meeting with Po is all shades of dramatic and sweet as she sweeps into the screens and his eyes are locked in admiration but he at least manages a – “huh?”, then she decides to take up the introduction:

Mei Mei:  “I, am Mei Mei ( then proceeds  all by herself to mimick Po singing  praises many thanks to her beauty) –Wow she’s amazing, she’s so, beautiful
“That’s sweet Po, but please try to save, all other compliments until after the performance”(She also responds by herself).
Po : “Me? No, I didn’t say…”
Mei Mei:  “Shush … shut it! After the performance!”
‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ comes to a grand close bringing its audience to the moment of truth as Kai the challenger asks his seemingly unequal rival the much resounding question–
Kai:Who are you”
Po: I’ve bin asking the same question…
The much anticipated ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ no doubt delights its audience (kids especially) with its contagious humour, subtle inspiration and wowing animation, however somewhat lacking in this sequel is its freaking awesomeness! – Enjoyable watch still.
