As a child, the name Rashidi Yekini was on the lip of every football lover; talking about his spectacular football skills. He stood out among his peers and was dubbed “The Goalfather” by his many teeming fans.
Rashidi Yekini was a striker on the Super Eagles team with a professional career that spanned more than two decades.
I remember 1994, a great year for Nigerian football after Rashidi Yekini in a World Cup match against Bulgaria, scored Nigeria’s first goal ever in the world’s most significant football competition....
Yekini scored 37 goals as a Nigerian international player, and represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups. He was also named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993.
He passed on May 4, 2012 in Ibadan under mysterious circumstances at the age of 48.
